LUIS MARTIN
THE ART ENGINEER
NEW YORK · SAN FRANCISCO · PUERTO VALLARTA MX
“I make collages. My work is an inquiry that plays out through my conversation with my hands on paper, with paint, the written and spoken word. "
ABOUT MARTIN
I created the term “The Art Engineer” for my thesis project in art school, which granted me creative license to unapologetically explore my role as an artist from a place of agency and leadership that extends from the studio outward.
Collage is my vehicle to explore and understand the world around me from a place of power, curiosity, and agency. Unlike any other art form, collage allows me to make connections between the visual language of popular culture and historical context to arrive at my truth, without the weight of an imposed narrative. As an artist I get to write my own story in my own syntax as the protagonist.
WORKSHOPS + TALKS
Collage is the most democratic art practice. Anyone can tear and paste paper back together. The magic is in the individual's choices of what images, textures and colors they used. It is a low risk, high reward activity that gives the artist tools for inquiry and creative license that enrich our perspective of our lives and its place in the world around us.
Let’s meet in the classroom, boardroom or on zoom for a talk about how collage enriches my artist journey and how you and your community can use collage to arrive at a creative flow to have new conversations and adventures. Reach out for availability and rates.
